WhatsApp may soon support 50-person video calls through Messenger Rooms

WhatsApp may soon support 50-person video calls through Messenger Rooms
WhatsApp Messenger

Amid the coronavirus lockdown, video calling platforms have become the lifeline for people working from home, students and a means for families to connect with each other. Video calling platforms have received a great response for users across the world. Zoom became the most downloaded app in April, with other platforms like Skype, Google Duo and Google Hangouts following closely.

Latest to join the video call competition could be the mega-popular chat app (WhatsApp). From Messenger Rooms to extending WhatsApp group call limit to eight to Instagram group live feature, Facebook is slowly rolling out all these new features globally. With Messenger Rooms, Facebook aims to take on video calling giants like Zoom. An upcoming feature test spotted by WABetaInfo would redirect you towards Messenger Rooms in order to make video calls with large groups.

The feature doesn’t actually work yet, as it’s still in development and could be a welcome option for those looking to have video calls within massive WhatsApp groups. You don’t need a Facebook account to use Messenger Rooms either, so as long as you’re okay with the lack of encryption, it should be a pretty seamless process.

What Facebook Messenger Rooms

Messenger Rooms is a video conferencing tool for WhatsApp Messenger application, a feature that
was launched last month.

How do Messenger Rooms work?

  • Via Messenger Rooms shortcut, users directly go to the Messenger Rooms window from their WhatsApp chat to start a video call.
  • The hosts of the Messenger Rooms will be able to invite anyone they want to join the video conferencing.
  • Messenger Rooms hosts can add 50 people at a time to a video call.
  • They will be able to send a link to join the call to each of the contacts.
  • Facebook has said that Instagram as well will have a Messenger Room shortcut in the near future.
  • Anyone without a Facebook account can join Messenger Rooms.

Zoom with all its bashing is an amazing app and we look forward to how WhatsApp's new feature can match up.
